Professional Development must include learning

Professional development is not just 'for the points.' To be considered a legitimate event, there must be learning taking place. Professional development is not just a meeting of the minds or sharing of information or a discussion of previous learning.
Deliberate, planned learning should be taking place. Learning can be defined as a "concerted activity that increases the capacity and willingness of individuals, groups, organizations, and communities to acquire and productively apply new knowledge and skills, to grow and mature, and to adapt successfully to changes and challenges."
My question to you: Is what you are offering as professional development actual learning and does it meet the requirements of 'Events Eligible for Inservice Points' from the Broward County Professional Development System and Master Inservice Plan?

What if points are not posted on an Inservice Record?

We have noticed a lot of Broward County Public School employees stating that they are 'missing' points on inservice records. There may be several reasons why the points are not posted: 1) the participant did not complete all coursework and was cancelled out of the event; 2) the participant did not complete the appraisal or did not complete the appraisal prior to the close out of the event; 3) the event is not closed in the current professional development management system; 4) there is a glitch in the event or system.

Now the question becomes: How can a participant, who completed all coursework and an appraisal, get these missing points posted on the inservice record?

Getting Ready

Inservice Facilitators and Organizers have been asked to help all staff get ready for the new professional development management system that is coming soon. All BCPS staff should print their ESS Inservice Records (from the ESS Homepage: Training: Inservice Report), PDSS Event History, and PDSS Current Schedule by spring break. PDSS Instructions may be provided by on-site Inservice Facilitators and Organizers.
