Professional Development must include learning

Professional development is not just 'for the points.' To be considered a legitimate event, there must be learning taking place. Professional development is not just a meeting of the minds or sharing of information or a discussion of previous learning.
Deliberate, planned learning should be taking place. Learning can be defined as a "concerted activity that increases the capacity and willingness of individuals, groups, organizations, and communities to acquire and productively apply new knowledge and skills, to grow and mature, and to adapt successfully to changes and challenges."
My question to you: Is what you are offering as professional development actual learning and does it meet the requirements of 'Events Eligible for Inservice Points' from the Broward County Professional Development System and Master Inservice Plan?

What if points are not posted on an Inservice Record?

We have noticed a lot of Broward County Public School employees stating that they are 'missing' points on inservice records. There may be several reasons why the points are not posted: 1) the participant did not complete all coursework and was cancelled out of the event; 2) the participant did not complete the appraisal or did not complete the appraisal prior to the close out of the event; 3) the event is not closed in the current professional development management system; 4) there is a glitch in the event or system.

Now the question becomes: How can a participant, who completed all coursework and an appraisal, get these missing points posted on the inservice record?

What does your school do for professional development?

. . . and how can the Professional Development Support unit at the Human Resource Development department help your school with professional development?

What we can provide for you . . . assistance in creating year-long school-based professional development around your school's School Improvement Plan focus; finding appropriate district events to meet teachers' needs; creating events in the professional development management system; have discussions regarding Professional Learning Communities (PLC's).

Are you ready for the PD Management System?

Broward County Public School System will be implementing a new professional development management system soon. Are you ready? In order for this to be a smooth transition, all events that have occurred and have end dates that have passed, should be closed as soon as possible. All spring and summer events should be created in the management system by March 15th, 2008.
